Replacing wood with ceramic imitation wood: the advantages
Due to its fragility to humidity, shocks and scratches, wood as a floor covering is not the best option for everyone. If this is your case, why not turn to ceramic tiles that imitate wood?
In fact, ceramic (or porcelain) tiles that take on the appearance of wood have many advantages. Discover them here:
Endless possibilities
There is a wide variety of ceramic tiles. Models that imitate different types of wood such as hardwood or barn wood offer a very realistic result. Ceramic tiles that imitate solid wood are particularly popular because of their rich and warm look.
Also, in order to harmonize with all decors, ceramics are offered in different shades or different finishes from glossy to matte to semi-gloss.
Increased versatility
Ceramic is much more resistant to water and humidity than wood. Its impermeability makes it easy to install in a basement, kitchen, laundry room or bathroom.
There is no need to be afraid if your ceramic floor gets wet: it will not be damaged. However, be careful, as it could be slippery, especially with a smooth finish.
High durability
Ceramic tiles are very resistant to scratches, cuts and will not tarnish under the sun. Chairs pulled across the floor, children running around with their shoes on, and pet claws won't damage them either!
However, although ceramic has good impact resistance, it is not indestructible. A dropped heavy object can break it.
Easy maintenance
Ceramic tiles are very easy to clean. Various types of cleaning products can be used without risking to damage them. They are also stain resistant. So, no need to scrub for hours!
The appearance of ceramic tiles usually remains the same despite the passing years. By choosing a ceramic tile with a timeless look, you could spend years with the same flooring without the room going out of style.
Potential savings
Ceramic tiles offer great value for money! Tile is often more affordable than wood flooring. This means that you can afford a low-cost floor without giving up the look of wood.
However, don't put all models in the same basket: some high-quality ceramics are more expensive than hardwood. It's up to you to store around or ask a Deco Surfaces dealer for advice.
The little disadvantages
Of course, ceramic (imitation wood or not) also has some small disadvantages if compared to wood:
- It is harder, so it is not ideal if you have leg or knee pain. It could even cause them, in the long run.
- It is also colder for the feet than wood. So remember to wear slippers in winter!
- It is a little less desired by homebuyers than wood, which is seen as a noble material.
- Unfortunately, it is impossible to change its color, whereas wood allows for sanding and a different tint.
- The installation of a wood floor is more forgiving of floor imperfections. It is important to prepare the floor well before installing the ceramic tile and avoid laying it on wood or plywood, as it could crack. Also, the surface where it will be installed must be flat to avoid creating uneven areas.
Whether it's to save money, for its great versatility, for its ease of maintenance or for its impressive durability, there are many good reasons to choose ceramic imitation wood rather than wood itself. All that's left is to choose the style of tile you like best and have a competent person install it!
