Ceramic Deco Ideas and Renovations
How to create a bathroom with a timeless look
Renovating every five years or according to trends is not your thing? Whether it's for environmental or budgetary reasons, frequent renovations are not always the panacea you might think.
In fact, renovating a bathroom involves great expense because of the fittings, tub and shower. Unfortunately, it is also a room that can go out of style quickly.
So, how do you ensure your new bathroom stands up to the ephemeral trends? By using materials and styles that don't stick to the niche designs of the moment. And by choosing those that have the staying power to keep up with the times.
Here are some precisions:
A neutral ceramic
In the bathroom, ceramic or porcelain tiles are omnipresent: the floor, shower walls and sometimes even all the walls are covered with tiles. Instead of choosing boldly patterned ceramic, opt for tiles in neutral shades like gray, white and beige. You'll be less likely to get tired of them quickly!
When it comes to tiles, use classic shapes like hexagons, squares or rectangles. Also, position them in a herringbone, brick or stacked pattern.
Since wood has a timeless look, you can also choose ceramic tiles that imitate it. This way, you will have access to the warm look while keeping your flooring waterproof.
Marble - authentic or imitation - is also a winning choice. It was already used in ancient Greece, and it will not be outdated anytime soon!
White metal for the fittings
Leave out black, gold and brass. For a classic bathroom, white metals are the ones to choose. However, silver and nickel tones, polished or shiny, are versatile and timeless.
If you absolutely want to incorporate a little touch of the current trend, you might decide to mix white metals with other (more trendy) ones for furniture handles or towel hooks. When you think they're out of style, simply change them; and inexpensively.
Dynamism through textures (not colors)
A timeless bathroom doesn't have to be boring and dull. But using different trendy colors could make this room less attractive after a few years.
To create life, consider generating contrast with texture instead. Mixing wood, matte porcelain, glossy faucets, fabric blinds… all will give personality to the room without offering an outdated look in 5 years.
Color combinations that endure over time
For color combinations, black and white will always be in style: you can't go wrong! Natural wood tones also work well with colors like blue and green. These pastel shades will create a very serene atmosphere in the bathroom. Sage green or blue-gray are particularly nice with blonde wood.
Looking for a little more punch? Painting the walls in a deep color like indigo or emerald green is a good option. It's true that these colors are currently trendy and probably won't be in 10 years. You can always repaint them to change the decor more easily than doing a major renovation.
Also, use your bathroom textiles to quickly change the decor. It's easy to replace your towels and shower curtain!
Don't compromise on the quality of materials
To be sure you won't have to renovate your new bathroom in a few years, don't buy cheap faucets, window covering and furniture. Good quality is a better guarantee that your purchases will last longer. If you like to store for deals, look to the second-hand market for a free-standing bathtub or a wooden chest of drawers that can be converted into a vanity.
