Wallpapering: how to do it right?

It can be intimidating to install wallpaper yourself. Especially if you are not known for your attention to detail and dexterity! However, with a little organization, anything is possible.

In fact, wallpapering can be easy when you do it the right way. The first step is to trust yourself, then follow the guide:

1. Know the characteristics of your wallpaper

On the market, you will find different types of wallpaper. Their quality can vary, as well as the way they are installed on the surfaces. Of course, it is important to be aware of the application method that is appropriate for your acquisition. There are 3 main categories:

Self-adhesive wallpaper: Simply remove the adhesive strip on the back and install the strips directly on the wall. This type of wallpaper is becoming increasingly popular.

Unglued wallpaper: This is the most manufactured and used wallpaper. It must be attached to the surface with a special glue.

Pre-glued wallpaper: It is a little more complex to install than the others (and messier). To fix it, you have to moisten the adhesive on its back. However, in the end, many people prefer this type of wallpaper.

2. Surface preparation: a must

First of all, for a smooth and symmetrical effect, you must make sure that the wall is in good condition. Indeed, irregularities on the surface, such as joints or paint drips, can create air spaces under the wallpaper. It is therefore important to sand the surface to eliminate the reliefs using 150 grit sandpaper. You must also repair any holes beforehand.

Then, a good cleaning is necessary! With a sponge and soapy water, go over the entire surface. It should be allowed to dry before moving on to the next step.

Then apply a coat of wallpaper primer. This is not a requirement, but it is advisable to ensure optimal porosity: a surface that is too smooth will have difficulty accepting the wallpaper. It could even slip off and remain crooked!

3. Take the measurements

Although the wall is ready for the wallpaper, it may not be level, while the wallpaper has perfect right angles. Don't worry, you won't have to redo the wall to get the final look right: just use a little trickery!

Take a pencil, a tape measure and a level. Calculate the width of your wallpaper. Then, draw a line from top to bottom on the wall (from one end) to see where the first strip of wallpaper will be. Use the level to draw this line.

Then cut the first strip of wallpaper about 4 inches longer than the height of the wall. This is how you will cheat if there are any unevenness!

Install it along the line and glue well all over with a damp sponge (see step 5 for details). Be sure to press in all corners and edges. If the wallpaper is sticking out in different places, that's okay: you can cut off the overhang.

4. Cut with a new blade

Whenever you cut a strip or overhang, make sure you have a very sharp tool, like a new x-acto blade. This will prevent any loose cuts that will detract from the look.

5. Glue, according to the type of wallpaper

Here is how to glue according to the type of wallpaper:

Unglued: Read the manufacturer's instructions and remember to use the glue recommended or supplied with the product. Once the paper is attached to the wall, smooth it with a damp sponge to remove air bubbles. To do a good job, smooth the wallpaper from the center of the strip, sliding outward.

You will also remove the excess glue during this step. You will need to wipe off any glue spills with a damp cloth. Otherwise, it will dry and leave unsightly marks. Finish with a stiff smoother.

Sticker: Read the manufacturer's instructions. Do not remove the entire tape immediately; go inch by inch. Start at the top and use the rigid smoother a little at a time until the entire strip is attached. Then work your way up and down to make sure everything is secure.

Pre-glued: Read the manufacturer's instructions. Usually, you'll need to soak one strip at a time in water and then bring it to the wall to stick. Just like with self-adhesive wallpaper, start with the top part and work your way up and down to make sure everything is properly adhered.
