6 tips for decorating small spaces

Your house has small rooms and you don't know how to arrange them? Is your condo adorable, but not very spacious? These small spaces can become real little paradises with the right decorating choices.

The idea is of course to make sure that everything is functional, yet pretty. Here are the ideas!

Focus on light colors

Pale colors such as white, cream or greige reflect light so the space will seem less restrictive. You could make this your base color, then accentuate with brighter colors like sage green or burnt orange, which are currently very trendy.

The same advice applies to flooring. If you have to choose a floor covering in a small room, prefer it light, whether it is an oak hardwood floor, a grey ceramic, a cream carpet or a sober vinyl. Also, it's best to go for a low-textured floor in small spaces. And if you opt for tiles, choose a standard size (too large will give the effect of an even less spacious room).

In a small kitchen, the color of the backsplash will also have an impact. For example, white subway tiles with white gaskets will be advantageous. There are many other ceramic choices that are suitable for a backsplash in a small kitchen: let a member of the team at Deco Surfaces guide you.

Think about multifunctional furniture

Furniture manufacturers have been using creativity for the past few years to offer furniture that, in addition to taking up little space, has different uses. In fact, it is not uncommon for their customers to be looking for this type of furniture because of the smallness of the rooms in their condo.

So, you could get :

  • A bed with storage under the mattress due to an easy access mechanism.
  • A wall-mounted desk that practically disappears when closed.
  • A coffee table that can become a comfortable seating area.
  • A dining table that can expand to accommodate guests.

The idea is to choose practical furniture that takes up little space to allow for optimal circulation.

Choose window coverings carefully

Whether it is canvas or curtains, the window covering is important: it will create dimension. But it is important to choose the right elements so that they do not saturate the eye.

For example, opt for pale curtains that are almost the same color as the wall so they don't cut the long effect. You could also opt for white, wispy curtains. If you install them full wall (from one end of the wall to the other, and from the ceiling to the floor), you will generate an effect of grandeur.

As for blinds, they should not be imposing in a small space: choose them discreetly! For example, alternating white models or canvases that will ideally remain raised to allow daylight to flood the room.

Clear the space

One of the most common complaints about a small room is its lack of storage. Defeat this by putting shelves up to the ceiling or by installing a small mezzanine. Above all, do not put any unnecessary element in the decoration: you should not load the space. Indeed, when there are too many elements of different textures, colors and shapes, a room seems not very spacious.

Délimitez les zones

The use of small rugs is a good decorating reflex, whether in large or small spaces. Their presence helps to partition (without obstructing the view), which can give an effect of grandeur. For example, in a small room, delimit the sleeping area from the office area with two rugs of different colors or textures.

Use the right wallpaper

Using wallpaper can be a good idea in small rooms. To create a tall or wide effect, choose them with vertical or horizontal lines. You could also make an accent wall by relying on a tone-on-tone pattern that will give texture without overpowering the look.

As you can see, if you have a small room or rooms to decorate, don't be discouraged! There are plenty of possibilities to create a beautiful and practical interior design.
