Safe home for kids: our tips
If you are about to see the stork or if you already have young children, your home will benefit from being thought of for their safety. An accident can happen so quickly!
Here are our tips for making your property cozier and minimizing the risk of injury.
Safety blinds
Around the world, there have been several child deaths related to blind cords. Canada has regulations on this subject.
It is quite easy for intrepid little ones to get their heads into the loop formed by the ropes, which can cause strangulation. A rope length of only 22 cm is enough for an accident to happen! To avoid this, hang the ropes high up so that they are out of reach, for example with a hook on the wall.
You could also choose pleated blinds that don't have a cord, modern blinds, curtains or even fabrics that can be lowered and raised manually. At Déco Surfaces, you will find different colored or patterned fabrics that are perfect for adding life to a room intended for children. In short, there is no lack of safe window coverings!
Wall-mounted furniture
Furniture can easily tip forward if the weight is not evenly distributed. For example, a dresser with an open drawer overflowing with clothes. In fact, open drawers on furniture can become a staircase in the eyes of little ones!
Even furniture without drawers, such as tall cabinets with doors, can be dangerous if a child gets caught in them. Most furniture manufacturers provide devices to securely fasten sold furniture to the wall.
Wall-to-wall carpet in the bedroom
Because of its thickness and texture, a mat helps absorb the shock of a fall. This is especially appreciated when it's the head that takes it all! A wall-to-wall rug in his room will definitely limit your child's injuries, such as bruises.
The softness of rugs and carpets is also perfect for little ones' rooms when they are learning to walk (because of the grippy side under their feet). Plus, they add a warm and cozy feel. They are available in all styles and colors to match the existing decor.
Corner protectors
What's the one place where baby gets hurt too often? The corners of tables, railings, doors or any other sharp, angular structure in the house. There's a reason why corner guards are available in stores. These devices usually attach without damage (without damaging your furniture) and protect the little ones nicely.
They come in all styles (rubber, plastic, black, gray, etc.): just choose the one that fits your decor. Once the "clumsy baby" phase is over, just remove them!
Vinyl in the playroom
While carpet is the softest floor covering, it's not for every taste and need. For example, it's not ideal in a playroom with messy items like paint and felt pens.
Vinyl is the ideal choice. Its slightly spongy texture is kind to the joints of children who are crawling or learning to walk. Moreover, falls will be much less painful than on a wooden floor!
To keep your vinyl floor looking clean, choose models with relief and patterns, such as imitation wood vinyl. Dirt will show up less than on a plain colored urface.
Keep objects away that they can climb on
Curious by nature and wanting to touch everything, toddlers have a tendency to climb anything that is accessible. They may move the footstool from the living room to the kitchen to reach the counter.
Although your children will always be under your supervision, it's ideal to store all these climbable items until the little one matures.
Other devices that can help you secure your home include stair gates, drawer latches, magnetic locks or handle covers. We wish you and your little ones happiness in your safe home!
